How long until I have a deposit?

See when you'll reach a 5%, 10% or 20% deposit, including a buffer for buying costs. Most first home buyers don't wait for 20%.

With less than 20% most lenders add lenders mortgage insurance, unless you use the Government's 5% Deposit Scheme or a family guarantee. First home buyers in Victoria may also pay little or no stamp duty.

How we worked this out
  • Savings grow by the same amount every month, with interest added monthly at the rate you enter.
  • A buying-costs buffer of $5,000 is added to each goal for conveyancing, inspections and loan fees.
  • Stamp duty isn't included: first home buyers in Victoria often pay none. Use the stamp duty calculator for your price and state.
  • Lenders mortgage insurance isn't included. It depends on the lender, the loan size and your deposit.
  • Tax on interest earned isn't included.
