How we worked this out
  • Both loans are principal and interest over the same remaining term, and the rates don't change.
  • Savings are the difference in monthly repayments; the five-year figure subtracts the switching costs once.
  • Interest is calculated monthly; lenders calculate it daily, so real figures differ slightly.
  • Fees on the new loan (application, annual or package fees) aren't included unless you add them to switching costs. The comparison rate of a loan helps you see those.
  • Breaking a fixed-rate loan early can cost far more than a variable loan's discharge fee. Ask your lender for a break cost quote.
